Welcome to Second Chance Plants Sustainable STEM workshop!
Where children explore the wonders of upcycling and sustainable gardening in a hands-on and creative environment. Tailored for budding environmentalists aged 2-5 and 5-12, this workshop sparks imagination and cultivates a deeper appreciation for the natural world.
Overview:
At Second Chance Plants, children embark on an inspiring journey to repurpose everyday items into charming plant holders and create thriving upcycled gardens. Through engaging activities, they learn about plant care, guerrilla gardening, and the importance of native species in local ecosystems.
Exciting Activities:
Upcycled Garden Design: Children unleash their creativity as they select repurposed receptacles, ranging from dinosaurs to teacups, to house their plants. They discuss the qualities of a good plant holder and choose suitable locations within the centre's grounds for their upcycled gardens.
Mural Creation: After selecting their plants, children express their creativity by designing murals with markers, envisioning the beauty of their future gardens. This collaborative activity fosters teamwork and encourages artistic expression.
Seed Experiment: Children conduct a fascinating experiment to observe seed germination in action. Using pea and bean seeds, water, paper towel, and Ziplock bags, they set up the experiment and eagerly await results, learning about plant growth and lifecycle.
Seed Bomb Making: Getting their hands a little messy, children craft seed bombs using air-dried clay, compost/peat moss, and seeds. They discover the concept of guerrilla gardening and discuss the importance of using local and native seeds to preserve local ecosystems.
Nurturing Nature Together:
Beyond the Beanstalk provides a mug with a plant as the first upcycled item for the future garden, inspiring children to continue their gardening journey at home or in their community. Through these activities, children develop a sense of responsibility towards the environment and gain practical skills in sustainable gardening.
