There’s a lot more happening beneath our feet than we realise.

Under the Beanstalk takes children below the surface to explore the fascinating world of soil and the living things that call it home.

Through hands-on STEM investigation, children discover that soil isn't simply “dirt”. It’s part of a complex living system, filled with connections that help plants grow, support ecosystems and keep our natural world working.

It’s messy science, curious thinking and a whole world waiting to be uncovered.

Sustainable STEM

Snappy STEM

Duration approximately 40 minutes

  • An engaging science explanation

  • Interactive, hands-on learning

  • A class- keep project that encourages sustainability

  • A short science explanation

Dig deeper. There’s science down there.

What makes healthy soil? Why are some tiny creatures so important? And what would happen if the world beneath our feet suddenly disappeared?

Under the Beanstalk encourages children to observe, investigate and think about the relationships between soil, plants, animals and the environment.

Along the way, they'll develop a deeper understanding of ecosystems and discover why even the smallest living things can have a very big job to do.

STEM Focus:

Soil • Ecosystems • Living Things • Earth Science • Sustainability • Scientific Investigation

Learning from the ground up

Children are encouraged to look closely, ask questions, make observations and connect what they discover to the environment around them.

The workshop supports learning across biological and Earth sciences while developing curiosity, environmental awareness, critical thinking and scientific investigation skills.

Experiences can be adapted for different ages and learning stages, making Under the Beanstalk suitable for early learning, primary schools and OOSH.

Curriculum & Framework Connections

Under the Beanstalk is designed to complement learning within the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF), My Time, Our Place (MTOP) and Australian Curriculum, with the experience adapted to suit the participating group.
